on issues affecting American 'heartland'

NASHVILLE,
Tennessee — Republican Sen. Marsha
Blackburn of Tennessee lamented the way the media frames what it considers top
issues while largely ignoring topics that matter most to average Americans living
in the nation's "heartland."
"There
are times that I think some of the mainstream media should just kind of get
over themselves and realize the work we do in Washington is not about them or
to please them necessarily," the first-term senator told the Washington
Examiner over the weekend. "It is to do what the American people
want to see done and in this day."
At
Politicon, an event dubbed the "unconventional political convention,"
Blackburn claimed that while many publications are focused on the impeachment
proceedings facing President Trump, most Americans are not interested.
"People
are focused on the story of their lives," she said. "They are not
focused on the story of the day in D.C., and it seems like some of the
mainstream media, they are into followers and clicks and all of these things
that are important to them for their individual self, but they are not
[important to the American people]."
Blackburn,
who served eight terms as a member of the House of Representatives, explained
that to her, the media is prone to focus on a specific narrative, despite the
fact that the country's successes are what is captivating the interest of
Americans like those in her home state of Tennessee. She specifically pointed
out that the low unemployment rate, security at the southern border, national
security, retirement security, and housing are the issues that she hears about
most from constituents.
"If
you were to follow me around in Tennessee, you would hear people say, 'I am so
proud of this president for getting the economy going,'" said Blackburn.
"Our unemployment rate is 2.3%, and people are thrilled that they're
making money again; they are very happy with that. They'll say, 'Now I want you
to get that southern border secure.'"
She also
lauded the president's trade policies with China and noted that agricultural workers across the
state would stand to benefit from the president's firm stance with foreign
nations.
Undeterred
by the impeachment proceedings,
the senator predicted victory in the president's quest for reelection in 2020,
saying, "The economy is good, people are making money, and our nation is
more secure."
